Grounding in Raja Ampat: A Skipper’s First-Hour Checklist

If your vessel has just touched a reef or bank in Raja Ampat, the first hour decides most of what follows: check for water, protect the crew, record the state of the tide, and do not apply heavy power until you know what the hull is sitting on. This checklist is written for skippers of liveaboards, phinisi and workboats operating between Waisai, the Dampier Strait and Misool, where help is real but never five minutes away.

First five minutes: people, water, stability

Groundings rarely hurt vessels as fast as panic does. Before anyone thinks about engines, run three checks in order:

  • Crew and guests — injuries first, then a headcount. On a dive boat, confirm nobody is in the water near the propellers.
  • Water ingress — sound every bilge and void space, not just the engine room. A slow seep under floorboards is easy to miss while attention is on the reef outside.
  • Stability and heel — note the angle of heel and whether it is increasing. A hull drying out on a falling tide behaves very differently from one pinned on a pinnacle.

If water is coming in faster than pumps can hold, the priority order changes completely: flooding control comes before any refloating attempt, because a vessel that refloats with an open wound can sink in deep water minutes later. The safest place for a badly holed hull is often exactly where it grounded.

The first-hour checklist

Once people and flooding are under control, work through this list and write the answers down — they will be asked for later by every engineer, surveyor and insurer involved:

  • Exact position (GPS coordinates, not just the anchorage name) and heading at the moment of grounding.
  • Speed at impact, and whether the contact was a single strike or a sustained grind.
  • State of tide at grounding, and whether the tide is now rising or falling. Tidal range in the Dampier Strait area is modest but enough to matter.
  • What the hull is resting on — coral, sand, rubble or rock — and along how much of its length.
  • Engine and gearbox behaviour: any new vibration, noise or temperature change when turned over briefly in neutral.
  • Rudder and steering response, checked gently by hand at the quadrant if possible.
  • Photographs of the attitude of the vessel, visible bottom contact, and every bilge before pumping changes the picture.

Resist the instinct to go hard astern immediately. Dragging a wounded hull backwards across coral heads can turn scoring into planking damage, tear off transducers, and wrap the propeller in its own debris. On a rising tide, patience refloats more boats than horsepower does.

A vessel on coral or rock with any ingress at all needs an inspection before serious refloating effort — by the crew’s own divers if qualified, or by arranged divers if not. After refloating: the checks that get skipped

Refloating is not the end of the incident. Before resuming the itinerary: re-sound every space twice over the following six hours, run the engine up gently while watching shaft vibration, test steering through its full range, and check the propeller visually. Schedule a proper underwater inspection at the next safe opportunity, and if the strike was more than a touch, plan a haul-out inspection — grounding damage to keel bolts, floors and garboard seams often shows up weeks later.
